Day 12: Psalm 119:89-96

A Daily Study of Psalm 119 (NKJV)

Meditations and Prayers Relating to the Law of God

Psalms 119 is an acrostic to end all acrostics! There are twenty-two strophes (paragraphs), corresponding to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each of the strophes has eight lines (verses), and every one of the lines in each strophe begins with the appropriate Hebrew letter marking that stanza.” – Coffman(1)

Every paragraph contains these words pertaining to God’s Laws:

Law of the Lord or Your Word– Body of prophetic, legal and moral directives (Mosaic Law)

Testimonies – Witness (God never asks us to believe anything that He does not give us evidence (testimony) for.)

Precepts – Command or order respecting moral conduct

Statutes – Something prescribed, prescribed task

Commandments – order by authorities

Judgements – Act of deciding a case, ordinance

PSALM 119:89-96 L Lamedh (hebrew letter)

Day 12 Psalm 119:89-86 (NKJV)

L Lamedh.

“Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides. They continue this day according to Your ordinances, For all are Your servants. Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction. I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have given me life. I am Yours, save me; For I have sought Your precepts. The wicked wait for me to destroy me, But I will consider Your testimonies. I have seen the consummation of all perfection, But Your commandment is exceedingly broad.”

In your own Bible:

Hi-lite the “Law” words from the list above.

Underline What you learn about the Word from this passage?

  • :89 “settled in heaven”
  • :93 “by them You have given me life”
  • :96 “exceedingly broad”

It is always good to consider “time” words – Circle

  • :89 “forever” – consider what he says is forever!
  • :91 “this day” – the earth He established continues to this day

Hi-lite the key word “All” (A key word will show up multiple times in a passage)

  • :90 “all” – generations-His faithfulness endures for everyone
  • :91 “all” -Your servants-in the context servants refers back to the earth established by God, it serves Him for His purposes.
  • :96 “all”-consummation of all perfection, all of man’s desires and ideas come to an end.

Circle the contrast words:

  • :95 “but” contrasts the way he feels about the wicked people surrounding him and his determination to consider God’s testimonies (the evidence of God).  We can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the wickedness around us, but if we take our eyes off of that and turn to the vast evidences of God, we can maintain our faith.
  • :96 “but” is contrasting human “perfection” or completeness, it ends, BUT God’s word is broad and infinite, wide and large.

“I have seen that all human wisdom or knowledge, however extensive, noble, and excellent, has it bounds, and limits, and end; but Thy law, a transcript of Thine own mind, is infinite, and extends to eternity.”
