THE IMPORTANCE OF REMEMBERING

John 14:26

Who was going to help the Apostles remember?

2 Peter 1:5-15

In verse 12, what is Peter reminding them of?

The phrase “these things” occurs several times in this passage and refers back to the list of virtues in verses 5-7.  In your Bible, underline the phrase “these things” every time it occurs in the passage and draw a line back to verse 5-7 or write beside it “verses 5-7”.

We all need to be reminded of what is good and right to do.  What happens to us if we neglect to remember “these things”?

“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it” is a common phrase.  Jude reminds us of what in Jude 1:5?

Lamentations 3:21-26

The word translated “recall” is from the Hebrew word shub and means to return or bring back.

Jeremiah is in the depth of despair, but what does he recall (remember) that gives him hope?

How can this be a comfort to us when we have despairing times?

When we find ourselves troubled, remembering all that the Lord has done for His people in the past, Who He is, and the promises that He has made to us through the scriptures can be a great comfort to us.  He always keeps His promises!  He is FAITHFUL!

Isaiah 46:1-9.

In verses 1-2 he describes how they were carrying their idols (Bel and Nebo) around.  Isaiah then contrasts these idols with the God of Heaven in verses 3-4, saying that the true God carries them (Israel).  He then makes another contrast in verse 5-7, their idols had to be “made” and in verse 8-9, He is God (by implication, He made the gold out of which they made their idols).

What does he want them to remember (verse 9)?

Do we want a God we have to carry or a God who carries us?

WARNINGS

Sometimes we are told to remember things as a warning to us.

Acts 20:28-31

Paul warns the elders in Ephesus by telling them to “Watch and Remember” in verse 31.

He warns them about 3 things in verse 30.  What are they?

Jesus gave warnings to some of the church’s in Asia in John’s Revelation.

Revelation 2:5

What does Jesus ask the Ephesian church to remember?

Revelation 3:3

What does he ask the church in Sardis to remember?

What does remembrance have to do with repentance?

Luke 17:32

As a warning Jesus said to remember_____________________________

What is the context of this passage? (Verses 20-33)Lot’s wife was looking back at the destruction (for its wickedness) of her hometown.  God had told her not to look back.

What is the lesson Jesus is trying to teach in verse 33?

Luke 9:62

Jesus tells us not to “look back.”

If we “look back” and dwell in the past, are we “fit” for work in the Kingdom?

When is it good to look back, and when is it not?

Ephesians 2:11-13 Look at Paul’s words to the Ephesians.

He begins with the word “therefore”.  To what is he referring?

He then tells them some things that they should remember.  What are they in verse

We should remember…

Those who have taught us (2 Timothy 1:5).

Our Brethren (Philippians 1:3).

Others in prayer (2 Timothy 1:3).

The “remembering” mind is a powerful thing.  It can be helpful at times and it can cause pain and sorrow at other times.

Remind Me Dear Lord (from a song by Dottie Rambo)
Roll back the curtain of memory now and then.
Show me where you brought me from
and where I could have been.
Oh remember I’m human and humans forget,
so remind me, remind me dear Lord.
